Nothing is written in stone! But here’s an idea of what you can expect during your first visit with Angela. This first visit is your Initial Assessment. Though because you will have already submitted your Health and Nutrition Questionnaire before this appointment, more of your in-session time will be given to learning tools, choosing your first actions and making an overall plan for your journey.

  • Welcome and housekeeping
    • Personal information will be reviewed to ensure accuracy, especially contact info
    • Policies and procedures will be reviewed so you can ask questions before beginning

  • Review of Initial Forms: The health and nutrition information related to your current nutrition needs will be reviewed. Much of this information will have been submitted prior to your first visit. Usually this includes some or all of the following topics:
    • your goals for working with a dietitian
    • medications/supplements, previous/current medical concerns
    • lab results if available, blood sugar values if applicable
    • food allergies, intolerances
    • weight and weight history
    • food journals and usual eating patterns
    • food preparation and meal planning habits
    • living arrangements and family structure
    • bathroom habits
    • physical activity patterns
    • Angela will ask further questions as needed to ensure full understanding of your situation.

  • Initial Assessment: Angela will review the results of your initial assessment based on the above information with you. This assessment will include:
    • Where you are – how your nutritional health compares to standard recommendations
      • e.g. how your reported eating patterns compare to a standard healthy diet, what nutrition you may be missing or having too much of
      • e.g. how your labwork may be affected by eating patterns
    • What that might mean for your health – possible current/future nutrition risks related to health history and eating patterns
    • What you can do about it – possible areas to work on

  • Your feedback: You will have the opportunity to ask questions at any point through the visit. After discussing the results of your initial assessment, you will determine what you would like to work on first, if anything.

  • Goal-setting: You will walk through the process of creating a realistic and achievable goal, based on your priorities. You will learn common mistakes that hold people back from completing their goals and will make plans to keep you on track.

  • Education: Throughout the visit, you will be given tips and tricks about nutrition. Angela will also share any resources that could help with your goals. These could include recipes, links for further info, handouts, or other tools you’d like to learn more about.
    • Popular topics for nutrition education include: making recipes healthier, reading food labels, meal planning, portion sizes, building a healthy relationship with food (aka mindful eating), having less sugar, heart healthy eating, eating for weight management, shopping and preparing cost-effective meals, eating for diabetes, having more protein, eating for bone health, and many more

  • The Plan: All of the information from above will be summarized into an action plan. This plan may include a plan for follow up work with Angela. You may also request that notes from the visit be forwarded to your doctor to be included with your primary medical chart.

  • What you will leave the visit with:
    • a written summary of your initial nutrition assessment
    • nutrition info sheets on what we talked about for your future reference
    • your priority goal and ways to succeed
    • your action plan
    • the satisfaction that you are one step closer to preserving and protecting your nutritional well-being!
